Specification now needs to include supply This does not mean abandoning specification-led purchasing. Performance, reliability, compatibility and endurance remain fundamental. But availability increasingly needs to sit alongside them. When a customer specifies a particular SSD capacity, memory configuration or performance profile, the conversation should also consider when the hardware is needed, how much is required, whether demand is likely to increase and whether suitable alternatives have already been qualified. That changes the role of the reseller and integrator. Instead of simply reacting to a predefined part number, channel partners can add more value by understanding the workload behind the requirement. Does a customer genuinely need maximum write endurance, or is capacity the priority? Is the highest memory speed essential, or would a different configuration deliver the same business outcome more efficiently? Can an alternative product meet the technical requirement while reducing supply risk? These are no longer secondary questions. In a volatile market, they are becoming part of solution design.
The technology industry has always loved specifications. Capacity, performance, latency, endurance and interface speed have long shaped decisions around storage and memory. But in today’s market, another factor is becoming just as important: availability. The rapid expansion of AI infrastructure is changing the dynamics of the global component market. While GPUs and accelerated computing continue to dominate the headlines, every AI environment also depends on vast amounts of memory and storage. Data must be retained, moved, accessed and processed at unprecedented scale. That means the impact of AI demand is now being felt far beyond organisations building dedicated AI clusters. For resellers, system integrators, e-tailers and enterprise IT teams, this creates a new procurement reality. A technically perfect component is only useful if it can be sourced, delivered and supported within the required timeframe. AI is a memory and storage story too AI systems do not operate on compute alone. Training, inference and data- intensive applications all create additional requirements for DRAM and high- performance, high-capacity storage.
