Saving pennies, printing pounds: trends in toner yield

With prices continuing to rise in 2023, many businesses are increasingly feeling the squeeze and are looking at all areas of operations for cost savings – and getting the right printer toner could help.

To let the pounds take care of themselves, thinking of the pennies is more important than ever. One area where many people overlook potential savings is in their printer toner purchases. With a wide range of options available, it can be difficult to determine the best toner buying strategy. Should you opt for high-yield toner cartridges, which offer a lower cost per page but a higher upfront cost? Or is it more cost-effective to buy standard yield toner cartridges at a lower price? In this article, we’ll explore the difference to help customers save money and distributors promote their products. For this, we will focus solely on HP toner cartridges, specifically examining their actual page yield and marketed yield to see what the channel is buying, and whether they are buying smartly. Yield pricing significance Let’s look at some basic statistics to get an idea of whether the yield pricing is significant. Looking at the five top-selling HP toners, the standard yield version can deliver 2,120 pages on average, whereas the high yield racks up more than double with an average of 5,110 pages. If we consider price changes over the years, the following table gives us an idea of the average toner cost per page of printing.

Great, so end of story, people should buy higher yield and that’s the end of the article. Only that this behaviour is not what we see in the channel for toner implied sales on HP products. Despite the potential cost savings, our observations of the toner market for HP products indicate that standard yield toner cartridges are still outselling their high-yield counterparts in terms of units sold.
