Peripheral vision Resident data analyst Wickus Bester looks at the peripherals market, and how rising prices, and the increasing return to the office for many employees, is affecting it, while looking back over recent years for tips on how to make the best of the situation.

Working from home has brought about a paradigm shift in the way we approach our daily tasks. This trend has caused a surge in demand for computer peripherals, such as monitors and webcams, to create as close an illusion as possible that one half of our bedroom was ripped right out of a boardroom. In the process, we have seen peripherals stock flood the market and drive up prices, alongside the strain on the economy the UK has recently experienced.

Now, the times are a-changing again – in the opposite direction to three years ago. For instance, the percentage of London’s employees who work from home has dropped from the pandemic’s 73% to 47%, according to a recent report by Transport for London, signalling a significant return that means the city is now bustling again. This means that the UK IT channel should brace itself for another new ‘new normal’. But what should be done now to curb not only the upward trend of inflated prices but the changing needs of clients? And as the UK economy tries to avoid going into recession,

there is a looming question: is the market ready for this shift back to the office? To understand the current state of the peripheral channel, it is vital to examine how companies have adapted to past changes. One recent event that continues to impact the industry is the shortage of stock that occurred when the COVID-19 pandemic first hit. This shortage caused a skyrocketing of prices for peripherals, such as webcams, as people began to work from home. Industry leaders such as Microsoft and Logitech had periods of extended unavailability of webcams when everyone was building their office away from the office.
