EAGLE EYE – BI

Large screen TVs

We end this year’s Eagle Eye column with a simple mantra – go big or go home. In such spirit, in this month’s edition we analyse large format televisions, that being any TV with a diagonal display of 65 inches or greater. These devices are great for a multitude of use cases, from enhanced gaming experiences to improving your home office setup with the ability to access your PC remotely.

Over the past year, we have observed prices of large TVs in the channel following a downwards trend. As exclusivity of big televisions fades and the technology becomes more affordable, we monitor how this affects the stock movement cycles. We observe shipments of TVs entering authorised distribution in the channel, only to quickly be snatched up, creating a snowball effect where already existing demand is sped up by favourable price trends. User demands for technology like televisions have an interesting curve, as bigger seems to be better up to a certain point. Users want the brightest, crispest display on the largest possible screen, for ultimate immersion, but only until those tech improvements plateau around ‘good enough’. Prices fall because these trends eventually find their niche markets, and the general end user might be satisfied without having the latest and greatest. That adds another dimension to our mantra to take home with us – if you’ve gone big and haven’t gone home yet, you’ve got to go smart to stay ahead. Smart also means understanding what your customers want – email or call us – we can help you with that.
